Strange Horizons is expanding! To our great delight, Rasha Abdulhadi has agreed to join the Fiction team as an editor. We have been extremely excited to work with Rasha, who is also executive director at Split This Rock, a community of poets dedicated to the radical application of poetry and protest.

Introduce yourself, Rasha!

Rasha is a queer Palestinian Southerner who grew up between Damascus, Syria and rural Georgia and cut their teeth organizing on the southsides of Atlanta and Chicago. They are a member of Alternate ROOTS, Southerners on New Ground, Justice for Muslims Healing Collective, and the Radius of Arab American Writers (RAWI). Rasha's work has appeared in Mizna, Room, Lambda Literary, and Strange Horizons, and is anthologized in Luminescent Threads: Connections to Octavia Butler and Halal if You Hear Me. As a community technologist, urban farmer, and once and future beekeeper, Rasha is a geek for science both fiction and fact.

But wait, there’s more news! If you haven’t noticed, we have an intern this year for the first time ever. Rebecca Evans has been working with us for the last few months as part of her master’s degree. Now that she has obtained said degree (yay!) she’ll be joining the development team and continuing her work as an accessibility editor for SH.

We will also be announcing a new poetry editor sometime in the next few weeks.

And now, a fond farewell to the following staff members, who left the SH fam in 2019:

Web Team
Andrea Hull

Copyeditors
Elora Gatts, Keith Morrill, Tonya Bezpalko, Carey Ford Compton

First Readers
Ana Curtis, Nahal Ghanbari, Steven Huff, Juliet Kemp, Monte Lin, T. Rios, Joanna Z. Weston, Allison Mulder, Besha Grey, Ira Gladkova, Jira Boymoushakian, Liliya Benderskaya, S. A. Chandra, Sam Guay

We miss you all, and thank you for your dedication to keeping us all strange.

Want to join the team? We’ve just put out a call for a new podcast editor, and have volunteer spots for first readers and copyeditors. Take a look!

Quiet
The day the last qawwal was killed, my childhood city, already known for its lethal silence, for its censorship of words, for its refusal to listen, went into a deep deep quiet.

Back Story
You like that every single word, image, and idea in my poetry has meaning and is put there for a reason, so when you ask about the plant in my poem and need to know more about it. . .
