As far as Tolkien's use of Old English poetry, I was actually more struck with his imitation of battle narratives -- have you read any of those? Charles W. Kennedy's Anthology of Old English Poetry contains the wonderful "Battle of Maldon" and others. Tolkien saw action in WWI but didn't write realistic accounts of modern war, instead preferring the aesthetic distance and heroicism of imitating the old poems. I think a sense that war was very real to the writers comes across rather better in the originals, but you may disagree.
