An interesting situation happened recently when Wizards of the Coast moved into the Facebook applications market (D&D Tiny Adventures). Initially, of the eight characters available, only two were female: a ranger and a warlock (also the 'lightweight' classes, rather than say, a fighter). After a significant amount of outcry in the app's Facebook forum, a full eight characters in each gender were added. I doubt it would have happened without there being a push from the users.
