I read this at the Clarion West workshop a while ago, and it's just as good as I remembered. Glad to see it published!

I love this story! It's both funny and deeply felt; poetic, yet at times hilariously vulgar. It's also a brilliant look at language and how it shapes our world, our means of communicating with others, and even ourselves. Mayla uses words like unfamiliar tools; her wonder and her awkwardness both give us a vivid sense of her character. Her ability to accept others with such childlike faith and her resilient love of life are touching--particularly considering the amount of pain she has felt and continues to feel. I hope that there will be more stories about Mayla and Nell!

What a strong debut for Meghan McCarron. I'll be keeping an eye out for more of her work in the future.

I too hope she'll do more. Top marks for characterization: I really felt this one. I especially love the ending.

Yeah, wow. This was a terrific story, and so sad. I loved the voice, the funny perspective on language.

Meghan, I knew this story would see glorious print from the first time I read it. It's so wonderful I can't bear to heckle you on the forums. So more monks and telepaths, please. And girlish longing!
