I enjoyed the sparse style and flow of this piece. Thanks for publishing it.

Beautiful, and compelling, and convincing, and fine. You did shamans right.

Okay, so usually I'm Kaysen's biggest fan--I loved "What a Spaceman's Gotta Do" and "The Jenna Set." But this story didn't really work for me, and I'm trying to figure out why. Couple reasons, maybe.

First was, the story I had in mind while reading was Tim's "Little Gods," which probably isn't fair, as this is a very different story than that, though it has a somewhat similar theme.

Two is because of the format of the story--the story seems to break up into bits during the last third, which has some interesting thematic resonance, but I found it choppy going.

Finally, in this reader's opinion, the resolution felt a little inauthentic; that is, I didn't really buy that the protag morphed into a shaman. Also the attack by the previous wife seemed a bit abrupt and underplayed.
