This is what Strange Horizons needs more of in their fiction section. First class material with just the right balance of hard science, politics without polemics, and likeable characters.
Looking forward to part two next week.

Murph, thank you so much. Your support and that of a few others really made the difference.

Look out, Murph. I read a rough draft of this story. (SPOILERS! YOU'VE BEEN WARNED!) In part two, a giant space dragon shows up and starts spouting Marxist theory at everyone before it absorbs the proletariat, eats a lot of gassy food, and sets fire to the tails of capitalist dogs.

Seconding what has been said above - I'm liking this so far and am looking forward to seeing where it goes!

Fascinating - Reed has the ability to draw the reader into the story with a rush and to engage feelings complementary to the science. Her science seems very well grounded and I like the interplay of fairly abstruse techsci with human emotions we are all familiar with. Their accuracy and candor lend credibility to the scientific content. What's more, the passage about Reis' mother and the stars brought tears to my eyes. More! More!

This is just a placeholder comment because I refuse to torment myself by reading only half of Marguerite Reed's story and having to wait until Monday to read the rest...
