Since I am always interested in the backstage aspect of story creation, I thought I would offer those who are interested the chance to peek at my process.
This story began as a scene in my fatally-flawed first novel. I've posted that scene on my website if you'd like to read the astounding difference. I believe that only one line remains from the original.

I loved this story: the characters, the setting. Beautifully executed.
My only quarrel is that the ending was a touch predictable.

I loved it. Yes, the ending was a tad predictable (in the sense it wasn't wholly unexpected), but I don't think it detracts at all. It's the predictable but still heartbreaking endings that make the strongest impression on me.
