A Visual Arts issue wouldn't be complete without comics. Here, we present to you When They Sank, a short tale about abyssal mermaids written by Fernanda Castro and illustrated by Sunmi.


 



Fernanda Castro is a Brazilian writer from Recife. She's also an editor at Mafagafo, a Brazilian SFF magazine, and a freelance translator and copyeditor. You can find her on Twitter as @fernandaversa.
Sunmi is a cartoonist and illustrator whose work explores themes of emotional distance and fantastical femininity, within a framework of queer and Korean diasporic identity, mythology, and history. Their Twitter and Instagram are @sunmiflowers and their website is sunmiflowers.com.

The dragons are beautiful even when they’re dead, their serpentine bodies stacked up and up, their metallic blue scales glinting under the sun. This close, Mina can see how blank their eyes are through those thin layers of membrane. How empty. Dragons are not violent by nature, but they hunt what hunts them.
