Born in Mexico City to South American parents, Patricio Betteo has specialized in comic art and illustration for almost twenty years. His work has been published in a number of Mexican journals, magazines, and children’s books. He also enjoys playing guitar and painting.

Patricio provided art for this week's story, "How the God Auzh-Aravik Brought Order to the World Outside the World" by Arkady Martine. This interview was conducted by email in January 2016, facilitated by a Spanish translator.

Tory Hoke: Your work is abstract but figural, graphic but painterly. How did you arrive at this style? What effect do you strive to have on the audience?

Since I was a child, I have felt attraction to the wide variety in the graphic arts. How is it possible for various artists to represent the same idea in so many different forms? When the time came to imitate, I borrowed elements from everyone and combined them in my drawings the best I could. I have always held that the best formula for originality is to combine very different influences with each other and then mix in one’s own discoveries. This way, it is impossible for our own work to look like someone else’s.

Primero llegó Disney a mi vida, luego Garfield y Asterix y la revista MAD . . .

The first one to arrive to my life was Disney. Then came Garfield and Asterix and MAD magazine . . . When I discovered the superheroes from Marvel and DC, I already had an appreciation for Escher, Modigliani, Roger Dean, H. R. Giger, and Paul Klee. What a recipe! I must thank both my parents who encouraged my love of books. I must be thankful as well for the hundreds of hours exploring the bookshelves at home.

Tory Hoke: A splendid library! No wonder you're fluent in such a range of styles. How do you know what sort of style you want to use for a project?

I ignore my intuition. Intuition, I think, is the unconscious taking over the work of decision-making. In the world of the unconscious, errors can lead to interesting results.

What kind of effect am I looking for in the public? As an editorial illustrator, I primarily have to communicate a concept, putting the brain to work in a certain way, but without forgetting that it must be nice to look at. Deep inside, I am trying to replicate the same effect that other artists had in me when I was young.

Tory Hoke: So much of your work, like "the.slender.quest" and "qwerty.the.hermit," represent a self-contained story. What informs your storytelling decisions? How do you know when you've succeeded?

I am not the right person to know if my images succeed in their task, although I do know when I like them. As a professional, I think that we illustrators have a commitment to be clear and at the same time to generate questions, as if the image were a fragment of a narration, of something larger. Probably this is due to the influence of comics.

Tory Hoke: Very understandable. So many of your influences are narrative—comics, parody, and concept art. Do they inform some of the humor in your work? How do they shape your view of the world?

I think, by Latin American standards, I am a very serious person. However, my sense of humor shows up a lot in the far corners of my personality, and it escapes at unexpected times. It's comparable to the graphics; I do not like to be humorous by default. I prefer to add fun to the final details, hidden at first sight.

Tory Hoke: How is the art community where you are? How do you go about collaborating, exhibiting, and cross-pollinating for your work?

My moments of greater collaboration arrived when I became fascinated by comic authors in the mid-2000s. There aren't many comics artists in Mexico—compared with other countries—and we used to get together to make strong, collaborative experiments: anthologies, exquisite corpses, exercises of the "24 pages in 24 hours" kind, a la Scott McCloud, etc. However, today I am more focused on illustration, so I work alone.

Tory Hoke: How do you approach illustrating someone else's story?

I look for an exact point between the original text and my own madness. It is very important for me to be able to put something of my very own in everything that I do, always respecting the original text above everything. Through the years, I have discovered that it is possible for me to combine my current concerns of the moment with the routine work. It is a way to fight boredom, as well—to kill two birds with one stone!

Tory Hoke: Your work includes humor ("smoking.gun"), horror ("the.joke.maker"), and sometimes both ("into.the.labyrinth")! What attracts you to those elements? How would you describe the relationship between the two?

Su obra incluye humor ("smoking.gun"), horror ("the.joke.maker"), y, en ocasiones, ambos ("into.the.labyrinth")!

It is not something that I consciously do. That "undefined" formula, I believe, has an advantage: different perception levels. The same image might be found to be appealing by people of diverse age and interests. At the same time, it satisfies both my dark and humorous sides.

Tory Hoke: What other artists inspire or interest you?

The list is very long, from Scott Campbell to Dave McKean.

Tory Hoke: What would you like to see more of in contemporary fantasy and science fiction art?

("Without deviation from the norm, progress is not possible")

Originality. Artists that dare break the genre model. Frank Zappa said it well: "Without deviation from the norm, progress is not possible."

Tory Hoke: There can be no better example than your work for "Auzh-Aravik"! It's so vivid and challenging and appealing at the same time. I've never seen anything like it.

Nunca he visto nada igual.

Patricio Betteo: Me encanta saber eso. ¡La originalidad al poder!

I love to hear that. Power to originality!

Tory Hoke: What's your dream project?

¿Cuál es su proyecto de ensueño?

Patricio Betteo: Arte para videojuegos bellos y disparatados.

Art for beautiful and wacky videogames.

Tory Hoke: What's next for you?

To continue having fun with my work and never to put money first. To be able to inspire new artists as a way of returning the favor for all those who inspired me.

Tory Hoke: Thank you for your time, Patricio! It's been a pleasure.

Looking back, I see that my initial hope for this episode was that the mud would have a heartbeat and a heart that has teeth and crippling anxiety. Some of that hope has become a reality, but at what cost?
to work under the / moon is to build a formidable tomorrow
Significantly, neither the humans nor the tigers are shown to possess an original or authoritative version of the narrative, and it is only in such collaborative and dialogic encounters that human-animal relations and entanglements can be dis-entangled.
